Frequently asked questions
Is the training you offer good for self-defence?
Yes. Whilst there is no magic answer when it comes to self-defence, all our techniques are practical and tested under pressure. We practice all the skills needed when faced with a physical altercation - striking (punching kicking, etc.) clinching/ grappling (throws, take downs and defence against grabs and chokes etc.) as well as weapons training, which is often overlooked in many martial arts styles, despite unfortunately being ever more relevant for modern day self-defence. You do not require substantial physical strength as the system relies on technique and body mechanics rather than brute force.
Do I need to get fit before I start coming to classes?
No. Our classes are friendly and welcoming to all abilities and fitness levels. The classes will gradually build your fitness whilst simultaneously developing skills and is much more fun than the gym!
Am I too old to start?
No, classes are open to all from 14 to 84+ years old. We have students who started in their 50s (and later years!) with no previous martial arts experience who have showed marked improvements and progressed well in a relatively short period of time.
What’s the point of weapons training when it is illegal to carry a weapon?
By understanding how weapons can be used, we gain a much greater understanding of how an attacker might try and use a weapon against us and how we can practically defend against it. Timing, range, angles of entry/exit are all important factors that feed into both Filipino weapons and empty hand training. Furthermore, whilst we would NEVER advocate for carrying weapons, knowledge of how one might use them may allow us to utilise everyday objects in our environment such as umbrellas, belts, pens, chairs, coats, bags etc. as defensive tools in an emergency situation. Knowledge is key – having the awareness of possible situations and how to deal with them in as calm and collected manner as possible could be the difference for you and your family.
Finally, weapons training is a unique way to build full body coordination and boost mental stimulation so you can keep practicing into later life. The drills are both good physically and cognitively in a unique way not found in many other disciplines. You will find you will achieve faster hand speed, hand to eye co-ordination and ability to creatively think outside the box in fast paced, pressured situations.
Do I need any special equipment?
No. Your first lesson is free, and we will provide all equipment. If you plan to train regularly, most students will choose to purchase their own basics such as boxing gloves, a helmet, stick etc. However, for students on a budget or who are not sure of what they wish to buy for themselves, we can continue to lend equipment for as long as needed.
What should I wear for training?
No special uniform is required and comfortable clothes that you might wear in a gym such as shorts/joggers/leggings and a t-shirt is fine. Training at our Shepherd’s Bush class is barefoot as no shoes are allowed in the building. Trainers may be required for private lessons depending on location.
Is the training safe - will I get injured?
Whilst all physical exercise has some risk of injury, we train in a safe, sensible, and responsible way. Full warm-ups and cool downs will minimise injury risk and we also cater the techniques to individuals in the class to take into account of any injuries or restrictions they may have.
When it comes to practicing techniques with fellow students, we always start very slowly, and speed is only increased if you feel comfortable and ready to do so. Protective equipment is used at all times.
I don’t want to spar; can I still train?
Yes, sparring is entirely optional and done after the scheduled class (8:30pm to 9pm). No one is pressured to join in if they don’t want to.
